Team iSAMS Tackle the 3 Peaks Challenge

Five members of the iSAMS team have signed up to the National Three Peaks Challenge. They say there's a fine line between brave and crazy, and which side of it these colleagues fall is up to you to decide - but you may want to hold onto your hats and watch this space...

For those of you unfamiliar with the challenge often referred to as "the 3 Peaks" (or so we're told by hiking enthusiasts which, it's become abundantly clear in training, we aren't), this is considered one of Britain's toughest outdoor challenges. It involves taking on Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Mount Snowdon, reaching the collective summits of the highest peaks across the UK within 24 hours - and preferably in one piece.

This means climbing a whopping total of 3,064 metres, covering 23 miles of walking distance and a 462 mile drive, all in less than a day.

Who would sign up to this?

Let's meet the nutters who've decided to take this on...

Neil Ferreday - Software Developer, iSAMS

Neil joined iSAMS four and a half years ago as part of our Technical Support team before progressing into a developer role. Always eager to challenge himself and enjoying doing things outdoors, Neil knew that the National 3 Peaks was the perfect challenge for him; even though it's resulted in some sleepless nights and a very strict training schedule!

Jess White - Junior Software Developer, iSAMS

As a child Jess used to go on a lot of walking holidays to the Lake District, but hasn't done much hiking over recent years. She thought this challenge would be the perfect opportunity to get back into something she used to love whilst raising money for some amazing charities. She has been part of the iSAMS team for nearly three years, starting off as a Software Developer in the BAU team and moving to one of our Development teams last year.

Felice Plava - Partner Manager, iSAMS

Felice has been at iSAMS for just under five years. Originally leading our Development team he is now our dedicated Partner Manager, looking after our ever-growing catalogue of approved APIs and integration tools to help our schools run even more smoothly. Felice is actually scared of heights, so the 3 peaks will be particularly challenging for him!

Andy Ball - Software Developer, iSAMS

Andy is a Software Developer at iSAMS and works primarily on maintaining and enhancing our suite of mobile apps. He is a coder, photographer, hiker, nature lover and weather fanatic. He enjoys walking at the weekends with camera gear in tow, to capture the surrounding landscapes. During the summer months he can be found chasing thunderstorms.

Kate Isle - Content Marketing Executive, iSAMS

Kate joined iSAMS just a few months ago, signing up to the 3 Peaks challenge within her first week. Sitting in our Marketing team, Kate makes us all sound as fantastic as we are by writing content for our digital and print materials - as well as coordinating all the events we attend and/or host, both in the UK and abroad. Used to regular walking holidays in the Yorkshire Dales, Kate is looking forward to putting her fitness to the test on the 3 Peaks.

Why the 3 Peak Challenge?

So, right about now you're probably wondering what on earth possessed us to undertake such a challenge... It's a fair question and something that very much crossed our minds as we crawled our way to the top of Snowdon, caked in snow and in the middle of a hailstorm, all in the name of training.

We are smiling, we promise!

Well, this isn't just about achieving an incredible goal and working together as a team; we also have two wonderful charities that we all feel very strongly about and are raising as much money as we can for.

Last year alone, 9.6 million people died from cancer and the number of people affected by it is only set to increase in coming years. However, there are a lot of amazing people researching a possible cure and providing care for those who are currently affected.

Founded in 1988, Children with Cancer UK is a charity dedicated to understanding what causes children to get cancer, providing enhanced and more effective treatments, and supporting the families of those children who are suffering. In addition, Macmillan Cancer Support strives to provide physical, emotional and financial support for all those affected by cancer, helping them live life as fully as they can.

Please keep an eye on our Virgin Money Giving page for updates, as we embark on some much-needed intensive training to prepare us for our challenge. We will begin the National Three Peaks challenge on Saturday 11th May 2019, as we climb Ben Nevis.
